T.S. Eliot’s The Confidential Clerk is a masterful blend of drawing-room comedy and profound philosophical inquiry. On the surface, it is a play about mistaken identities and misplaced children: but at its heart, it is a search for identity, inheritance, and the courage to follow one’s true vocation.
Sir Claude Mulhammer, a wealthy financier, believes he has finally found a way to bridge the gap between his public life and his private regrets. By hiring the young, talented Colby Simpkins as his “confidential clerk,” Sir Claude hopes to mentor the man he believes to be his secret, illegitimate son.
The plan is complicated by the arrival of Sir Claude’s eccentric wife, Lady Elizabeth, who is convinced she has a lost son of her own. What follows is a witty, intricate puzzle of family secrets and startling revelations. Eliot uses the framework of a classic farce to ask deeper questions about who we are when the labels of “father,” “son,” or “clerk” are stripped away.
